  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp ground nutmeg
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ¾ cup buttermilk
  • ½ cup unsalted butter (for glaze)
  • 1 ½ cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp pure maple syrup
  • 1 tsp vanilla bean paste (or vanilla extract)
  • 12 tbsp milk (for thinning, as needed)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch pan.
  2. In a bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, baking soda, nutmeg, and salt.
  3. Cream butter and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, then mix in vanilla.
  4. Alternate adding the dry mixture and buttermilk to the creamed mixture until just combined.
  5. Spread batter in prepared pan and bake for 22-25 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool completely.
  6. For the glaze, melt butter until golden brown; whisk in powdered sugar, maple syrup, and vanilla paste until smooth.
  7. Pour glaze over cooled bars and let set before slicing.
